From 1 July 2009, and for a period of a year, the
Hellenic-African Chamber of Commerce & Development (HACCD) has assumed the
Chair for the European Business Council for Africa
and the Mediterranean (EBCAM).
EBCAM was founded in 1973 with its headquarters in Brussels and
participating chambers from European countries (Belgium, Denmark,
France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain-Canary Islands, Switzerland, and the United
Kingdom). Through its member organizations, EBCAM represents over 2,000 European companies, with more than 3,000,000 employees, and is the only
European organization that represents the range of business activities
undertaken in Africa by European companies, offering valuable services to
members (information, economic missions, etc.) and promoting Euro-African
economic relations.
The new President of EBCAM, and President of the
Hellenic-African Chamber Sotiris Mousouris in closing the sessions of the
Governing Council meeting in Athens on 26 June 2009, said that while in Africa
the impact of the financial and institutional crisis is not as hard as
elsewhere, African countries need increased financial assistance to reach the
Millenium Goals and that several states are offered for trade and investment. EBCAM is planning joint business missions in Nigeria, Ghana,
Tanzania and Cape Verde in early 2010.
On 25 June 2009 the Hellenic-African Chamber extended an
official dinner at the Yacht Club where members of EBCAM were present as well
as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. M. Varvitsiotis, the Vice
President of the European Investment Bank Mr. P. Sakellaris,
the Ambassadors of African countries, the President of the Hellenic Foreign
Trade Mr. P.
Papastavrou and many other leading Greek businessmen and shipowners operating in Africa.
